Dr. Rafael F. Sobrino Suárez was born in San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico, the city where he still has his residence. He began hybridizing in the early seventies inspired by a powerful wave of big orchid companies and hybridizers in the U.S. That era, which he nostalgically names "Cattleyas Golden Era", served as a frame to stir up his spirit. It launched him into a voyage to the mysterious world of orchid hybridization, in particular, of the genus Cattleya. As he has stated many times: "I hybridize because it is born from my spirit and also for my country, family and friends, and for anyone who can appreciate the beauty of orchids." His trajectory puts him apart as one of the most outstanding hybridizers of the world. His hybrids are registered in the Royal Horticultural Society, which is the international cultivar registration authority for orchid hybrids.
